What is a Settlement Strategy?
The Yass Valley Settlement Strategy will provide a framework for the sustainable growth of the Yass Valley’s towns and villages to meet the varied needs of our community.
The Settlement Strategy will identify appropriate locations for future housing and development that allows for planned sustainable population growth, including opportunities for more diverse and affordable options.
The Settlement Strategy will look to strengthen the vitality of our towns and villages while protecting important environmental, cultural and agricultural assets.
Why are we preparing a Settlement Strategy?
The Yass Valley Settlement Strategy will be a key strategic planning document that will inform Council’s decision making for the sustainable use and development of land in the Yass Valley LGA.
The Settlement Strategy may make recommendations to implement, update or amend Council’s environmental planning instruments (the Yass Valley Local Environmental Plan 2013 and the Yass Valley Council Development Control Plan 2024).
Where will the Settlement Strategy apply?
The focus of the Yass Valley Settlement Strategy is to deliver a comprehensive settlement strategy for Yass and Murrumbateman towns, and the small villages which include Binalong, Bookham, Bowning, Gundaroo, Sutton and Wee Jasper.
Growth objectives, requirements and key controls for development in the Parkwood area will be subject to the Parkwood Development Control Plan 2026 (exhibited March-April 2026).
Next steps?
All feedback received through this Community Visioning will inform the preparation of the draft Yass Valley Settlement Strategy and Review of Yass Valley Water Source Strategy.
It is anticipated that a draft of the Yass Valley Settlement Strategy and Review of the Yass Valley Water Source Strategy will be available for public exhibition in early-2027.
