Yass Rail Trail
The Yass Rail Trail is a proposed 4.5 km walking and cycling path that would transform the disused Yass Tramway corridor from Yass Junction to Yass Town into a recreational trail. The project includes the historic 1892 Yass River bridge and connections to the Yass Railway Museum.
Background
Yass Township was previously serviced by a rail spur that allowed people and goods to be transported to and from Yass CBD to Yass Junction Railway Station and then via the
Great Southern Rail Line to Sydney or Melbourne.
The rail spur was used by light rail stock and was classified a tramway.
Ultimately the rail spur closed in 1988 to rail movements and is now classified as a disused rail line.
The proposed Yass Rail Trail runs along the disused Yass Tramway corridor between the Great Southern Railway (Yass Junction Railway Station) and Yass Township a distance of 4.5km.
The Rail Trail route includes a heritage listed steel bridge built in 1892 across the Yass River, and the route ends at the Yass Railway Museum (also heritage listed) near the centre of Yass.
When constructed, the Rail Trail will run from Yass Junction Railway Station through woodland down to Yass Town, crossing the Yass River before running the length of Dutton Street in Yass and ending at the Yass Railway Museum.
The Yass Rail Trail Project consists of 3 phases:
Phase 1 - Strategic assessment and feasibility study. This phase has been completed.
Phase 2 - Detailed design - the detailed design has been completed, and final community and stakeholder consultation is now commencing.
Phase 3a – Funding
Phase 3b - Construction
