EOI – Australia Day Committee

Yass Valley Council is seeking Expressions of Interest from community members to join the Australia Day Committee.

The Committee will provide independent community input into the assessment of Australia Day Award nominations and support the planning and delivery of Australia Day celebrations across the Yass Valley Local Government Area.


Australia Day Committee

Council is establishing the Australia Day Committee to strengthen community participation, transparency and confidence in the Australia Day Awards process.

The Committee will comprise four (4) to six (6) community representatives, together with two (2) Councillor representatives, including the Mayor.

Council is seeking community representatives who have a strong understanding of the Yass Valley community, demonstrate sound judgement and integrity, and are committed to recognising and celebrating the outstanding contributions of local individuals, organisations and community groups.

Membership will seek to reflect the diversity of the Yass Valley community and encourage participation from a broad range of sectors, including:

  • First Nations peoples;
  • volunteers;
  • sporting organisations;
  • service clubs;
  • business representatives; and
  • community organisations.

Council welcomes Expressions of Interest from community members who bring a range of experiences, perspectives and connections to the Yass Valley community.


Role of the Committee

The Australia Day Committee will provide advice and recommendations to Council and will be responsible for:

  • reviewing and assessing Australia Day Award nominations;
  • assessing nominations against an approved evaluation matrix;
  • recommending award recipients to Council;
  • providing advice and assistance in the planning and delivery of Australia Day celebrations across the Yass Valley Local Government Area;
  • promoting community participation by encouraging nominations and involvement in Australia Day activities; and
  • contributing to a transparent, fair and consistent assessment process.

Committee members will be expected to consider nominations objectively and in the best interests of the Yass Valley community.

The Committee will operate in accordance with an approved Terms of Reference and Council's governance requirements.


Governance and Decision-Making

The Committee will operate as a committee of Council.

Committee members will assess nominations and make recommendations to Council. Final endorsement of Australia Day Award recipients will remain the responsibility of Council.

This approach will ensure community members have a meaningful role in the assessment process while maintaining appropriate Council governance, accountability and legislative compliance.

Committee members will be required to comply with Council's Code of Conduct and appropriately manage and declare any actual, perceived or potential conflicts of interest.
