Proposed Change to Heavy Vehicle Load Limit - Back Creek Road, Gundaroo
Council’s Local Transport Forum has recently recommended that, subject to community consultation, a 15-tonne load limit be placed on Back Creek Road, Gundaroo.
This recommendation in response to requests from the local residents and Gundaroo community to reduce the amount of heavy traffic on this rural road.
The final decision to enforce a load limit will be based on the results of this community consultation process – so your voice really does count!

Back Creek Road is a rural road that joins Sutton Road and Yass River Road in Gundaroo.
The road service numerous rural properties and has three ‘no through’ roads – Sibley Rd, Lees Rd and Rowley Lane.
Yass Valley Council have recently completed works to fully sealed the road and replace the low-level creek crossing with a concrete bridge.
Council has received safety concerns about the number of heavy vehicles using Back Creek Road as a through route between Sutton Road and Yass River Road, bypassing Gundaroo village.
Council’s Local Transport Forum has recently recommended that, subject to community consultation, a 15-tonne load limit be placed on Back Creek Road.
What Does a Load Limit Mean?
Heavy vehicles on the NSW road networks are managed by various State legislations.
Placing a 15-tonne load limit on a road restricts movement of any heavy vehicle with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) over 15 tonnes. This means that any heavy vehicle over the 15-tonne load limit will not be able to use the road as a through route.
There are circumstances where heavy vehicles over 15 tonne can access a load restricted road. A 15-tonne load restriction does not apply to heavy vehicles over 15 tonne if:
- they have no alternate route or the alternate route is also impacted by a load limit.
- heavy vehicles over 15 tonnes require access to properties along Back Creek, Sibley Rd, Lees Rd and Rowley Lane.
A 15-tonne load limit was selected to allow unrestricted access to the ‘normal’ type of commercial and delivery vehicles that service our rural areas.
